Steven Davis issues Rangers vow amid Aris embarrassment

Steven Davis has vowed things will turn at Rangers if everyone at the club sticks together through this challenging period.

The Ibrox club suffered one of the worst European defeats in their history on Thursday night as they were put to the sword by Aris Limassol in Cyprus. An Abdallah Sima goal was not enough as the Scottish giants fell to an embarrassing  2-1 defeat.

Davis - who was taking charge of his first interim game - insists the players were hurting in the changing room post-match. Not that it will be of any consolation to the travelling supporters who spent vast sums of money on the trip.

However, the Northern Ireland midfielder is calling for unity to help the club keep stability on the field while James Bisgrove searches for a permanent successor to Michael Beale off it.

"The dressing room is hurting," the 38-year-old told Rangers TV. "We thought this was an opportunity to come here and get some points. We haven't managed to do that. We caused a lot of our own problems tonight.

"The two goals we concede are really poor and give us a mountain to climb but the boys kept trying to go and I couldn't fault them from that perspective but they lacked a bit of quality at times.

"You want to settle into the game early on, but after that (the early goal) it gives you a lot of work to do. I thought we started the second half reasonably well. There are not many positives to take from it.

"It's a difficult place to be at the moment, but in terms of the effort from the players I couldn't ask any more. We just have to continue with the basics and hard work. It's important we stay together at this moment and eventually things will turn."
