Steven Davis in retirement hint ahead of final World Cup qualifiers

Rangers midfielder Steven Davis says he will take stock of his international career at the end of the current World Cup qualifiers.

Northern Ireland play Lithuania on Friday before completing their campaign against Italy next Monday.

Both games are at Windsor Park with Ian Baraclough's side already out of contention for Qatar 2022.

Captain Davis says he will reflect on his current situation before making any decisions on his career.

But at 36 retirement from the international scene is a very distinct possibility for Northern Ireland's record caps holder.

Davis has made 18 appearances for Rangers this season and was rested by Steven Gerrard for recent clashes with Aberdeen and Ross County.

He said: "At the end of every campaign you sit back, reflect and see how you feel physically and how you see things progressing.

"That will be the same situation this time, I will just reflect on things and we will go from there."

Northern Ireland will be hoping to finish the World Cup qualifiers on a high note, and despite being mathematically out of contention the final group game against Italy will be a special night in Belfast.

Asked if it would be a fitting way to sign off from international duty, Davis said: "I am not thinking about that at this moment in time, I am just here this week to do as well as I can and try and get two good results.

"The Italy game is a great one for us to look forward to to finish off the campaign and test ourselves against them - that is all my focus is on at this moment In time."
