Steven Davis facing Rangers injury battle as midfielder sweats over Celtic clash

Gary McAllister has backed his boss after Steven Gerrard insisted he wasn't using Rangers as a stepping stone.

McAllister believes it's impossible to view the club in such a light after Gerrard penned a new four-year deal.

The manager's entire backroom staff joined him in extending their contracts and McAllister insists it's a sure-fire sign of all-round commitment at Ibrox.

He said: “When you come into a building like the Hummel Centre or walk through the doors at Ibrox you cannot describe it as a stepping stone. It’s not. Simply, it can’t be.

“We’ve been given great support and the way the club has embraced us proves it is committed to us and we’re all together.

“There has been a lot done behind closed doors, which fans don’t always see. Football wise? It’s about kudos and respect in Europe, as well as domestically.

“We’ve got to keep pushing the levels and standards, allied to hard work. When clubs like this gather momentum and everyone is together, anything can happen.”

Meanwhile, McAllister admits midfielder Steven Davis is facing a race against time to be fit for Celtic after picking up a foot injury in the recent 2-2 draw at Aberdeen.

He said: “It isn’t as bad as we thought and hopefully he will be in and about again in the next couple of weeks.”
