Steven Davis and the bittersweet Rangers decision Barry Ferguson reckons Ibrox midfielder may need to make

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson insists Steven Davis may need to call time on his international career to prolong his time at Ibrox.

The 36-year-old was left out from the start of his side's 1-1 draw with Hearts on Saturday, but did feature for the final 15 minutes.

The Northern Irishman has started six out of nine games under Steven Gerrard this season, but only played a total of 25 minutes in the last two Premiership games.

The midfielder played a full 90 minutes for his country in their 2-1 defeat to Bulgaria in the World Cup qualifiers last week.

Ferguson told Go Radio: "I think you've got to be respectful to Steven Davis, he's a top experienced player.

"He has played a lot of football this season and when he goes away with his national team he plays the full 90 minutes virtually every single game.

"I'm sure Rangers would like him to call it a day but you've got to give him respect and it's going to be down to him.

"I think he is so important to the Rangers team.

"I would wheel him out, he's that good."
