Steven Bergwijn: Tottenham complete signing of PSV winger on five-and-a-half-year contract

Tottenham have completed the signing of PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn on a five-and-a-half-year contract.

The fee for the 22-year-old Dutch international, who has been handed the No 23 shirt vacated by Christian Eriksen, is understood to be in excess of £25m.

“It’s an amazing club, it’s a dream for every footballer to play in the Premier League, the atmosphere, the stadiums are always full,” Bergwijn said.

“I look day to day, I want to score goals, give assists, I want to win the Champions League. Last season I love to see that you beat Ajax.

“I was 13 when I went to PSV, we wake up at six in the morning, go to PSV, drive one hour to Eindhoven, then go back to school at 3 or 4 o’Clock every day. When I wasn’t training I was asleep in the car. I know what they have done for me, without them I would not be here.

“When I was a young boy I looked up to the coach Mourinho, now I play for him. You have to believe in yourself, I know what I can bring, I’m good with the ball, I can score, playing good football, that’s what I like, to play here is a dream for me, it’s an honour.”

Bergwijn came through the academy ranks at PSV and made his first-team debut at 17, going on to make 149 appearances for the club and winning three Eridivisie titles.

After Eriksen’s move to Inter Milan was finally confirmed yesterday for a fee of £16.9m, Tottenham also announced they have exercised their option to sign Argentine midfielder Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent basis.

Lo Celso had initially struggled after joining Spurs on loan from Real Betis, scoring two goals in 20 appearances in total, but has begun to flourish in recent weeks.

A Spurs statement read: “We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to convert the loan of Giovani Lo Celso to a permanent transfer.

“The midfielder has produced impressive performances after establishing himself in the team following a hip injury which restricted his playing time in the early part of his loan at the club.”
