Steven Bergwijn set to achieve 'dream' move after Tottenham agree £25m transfer with medical set

Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn has taken a big step towards leaving the club after a £25 million transfer fee was agreed with Dutch champions Ajax this summer, with a medical set to take place on Wednesday.

Bergwijn struggled for game time in the second half of last season and made no secret of desire to leave, with one eye on a place in Louis Van Gaal's Netherland's squad for the 2022 World Cup. Antonio Conte led Spurs back into the Champions League last season but that has done little to change the 24-year-old's mind.

The Athletic report that the medical will take place this week and that despite interest from a number of Premier League sides, he has decided to return to the Eredivisie. Fabrizio Romano also reported the news, adding that a fee of €30 million (£25 million) has been agreed between the two clubs.

Bergwijn's time in north London has been a frustrating one in many respects. The forward burst onto the scene with the winner against Manchester City following his transfer in January 2020 from PSV but never secured a spot in Tottenham's front three. Following the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski this winter and Richarlison in the summer, his chances of game time have only diminished further.

But he is now closing in on what could be considered a dream transfer for him with Ajax set to once again compete in the Champions League. Speaking to Dutch outlet AD after scoring in the Netherlands 4-1 win over Belgium in June, Bergwijn said: "Is it important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That’s not my top priority. It would be nice, but what’s important is that I’m going to play.

“I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. But for the last few months, I was hardly looked after there. I want to go and play somewhere weekly. It would be nice if there was clarity soon. My situation now has to be different.”
