Steven Bergwijn sends heartfelt message to Tottenham supporters after Ajax transfer

Steven Bergwijn has delivered a final message to the Tottenham Hotspur fans after completing his move to Ajax on Friday.

The 24-year-old has returned to the Eredivisie in a deal that could eventually be worth just under £28million including add-ons, slightly more than the £27million Spurs bought the Dutchman for from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020. Bergwijn has enjoyed mixed fortunes during his time at Tottenham, with his career at the club fragmented by ankle problems and struggling to earn himself a run of starts in recent season.

However, he has contributed some big moments in front of goal for the club, with a debut strike against Manchester City, a goal against Manchester United, a standout performance against West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final last season and then there were the two dramatic late goals in added time against Leicester City in the Premier League to seal a remarkable turnaround for Antonio Conte's team.

Bergwijn released a compilation video of some of those big moments on social media, using quotes from when he first joined and then he posted a farewell message in the caption beneath.

"Dear Spurs fans, thank you for all the great moments and memories. It was an honour to have been part of this beautiful club. All the best. COYS," he wrote.

The Dutchman had fans in all of the Spurs managers he played for but was unable to forge a permanent role in the team. Bergwijn admitted earlier in the summer while on international duty that he wanted to leave Tottenham in order to get regular starts elsewhere after falling down the pecking order at the north London club. Now he has got his wish with a return to the Netherlands and a new club in Ajax.

Spurs are expecting to have a new face in through the doors within the next 24 hours with Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet set to sign on loan ahead of their flight to Korea on Saturday evening. The 27-year-old France international is set to undergo his medical at Hotspur Way before putting pen to paper on the move.
