Steven Bergwijn says what all Tottenham fans want to hear

New Tottenham man Steven Berwijn has said that he was surprised at completing a transfer to the club during the January window.

The Dutchman signed from PSV Einshoven in a deal that could rise to a reported £27 million. He signed a five-year-deal with the club and has made an instant impact.

The 22-year-old was named in the starting lineup for the Premier League match against reigning champions Manchester City and scored an impressive volley to put Spurs ahead in the game.

Heung-min Son added a second later in the second half to secure all three points for Jose Mourinho's men.

Bergwijn left the field on 70 minutes after what appeared to be cramp cut his debut short, and the Netherlands international was ineligible to play in the FA Cup replay against Southampton three days later.

However, he could return to action when Tottenham take on Aston Villa at Villa Park this afternoon (Sunday).

Ahead of the game, Berwijn spoke about how his move to Spurs last month came about.

“My father called me and said: ‘Pack your stuff, you’re going to London,’" he told the Guardian.

“It was fast. I didn’t expect to make the transfer in January. I thought in the summer. But if Tottenham wants you, you can’t say no."

Bergwijn also has high ambitions during his time in the Premier League.

“You want to be the biggest, the greatest. I hope I can be that big in England," he said.
