Steve Wright's son Tom shares emotional tribute to former BBC Radio 2 DJ after his death

Steve Wright’s son Tom has said he was able to get to know the former Radio 2 DJ in a way “he never had” before he died on Monday aged 69.

The presenter’s passing has led to an outpouring of grief and tributes with a friend saying he “died from a broken heart” after his show was dropped by the BBC.

Tom Wright, a club promoter, flew from his Los Angeles base to be with his father in the days before he died and has said he wants to carry on his old man’s “legacy of kindness”.

He said: “It meant the world to me that I was able to get to know my Dad in a way I never had in the months before he died.

“I will cherish every moment we shared and every memory we made.

“I only hope to make him proud and build on his legacy with kindness and love.”

Steve Wright’s passing was unexpected with the veteran DJ set to receive an MBE for services to radio, while his name was attached to a television show.

His final Radio 2 show is reportedly recorded but will not be broadcast.

His 38-year-old son added: “This made every struggle worthwhile to have had this time with him before we lost him.

“God rest your soul Dad.”

The late presenter had been married to Cyndi Robinson with whom he had Tom and another child. They divorced after 14 years of marriage in 1999.

No cause of death has been given by police who were called out to his address following an “incident”.

His younger brother Laurence Wright, 65, has now blamed the BBC star's death on his poor diet.

He told the Mail Online: "He was aware that he could have looked after himself better, in his lifestyle choices. Obviously we all wish he had.

"It's like anyone who doesn't look after themselves over an extended period."
