Steve Wilks impressed with Myles Garrett’s run defense

Myles Garrett earned his first Pro Bowl berth in 2018 by recording 13.5 sacks and terrorizing quarterbacks off the edge. Yet he’s impressing new Browns defensive coordinator Steve Wilks with his run defense.

It’s something that has stood out throughout the first few days of Browns training camp. Garrett has been a consistent problem for the offensive unit whenever they try to run the ball in team drills. Wilks has taken notice.

“Myles is extremely quick off the ball,′ Wilks said Thursday. “We know he can rush the passer. I’m really impressed right now with how he’s playing the run.”

Wilks elaborated on why that is so important to his defense.

“We talk about that all the time. We’ve got to do a great job stopping the run first.”

The Browns did not take Myles Garrett No. 1 overall in 2017 to be just a great run defender, of course. But if he can make a big impact in the run game beyond being one of the NFL’s best pass rushers, it takes the Browns defense to a new level. A level which Wilks would love to see…
