Steve Smith mocked over "desperate" review as Sri Lanka earn stunning win over Australia

Australia star Steve Smith has been mocked after producing one of the worst reviews of all-time as his side slipped to an innings defeat against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Australia had comfortably won the first Test by ten wickets and were hoping to wrap up a series victory in the second and final match. However, they were comprehensively beaten by an innings and 39 runs thanks to a brilliant double hundred from Dinesh Chandimal and Prabath Jayasuriya's 12-wicket haul.

After Australia posted a first-innings total of 364, thanks to centuries from Marnus Labuschagne and Smith, Sri Lanka responded with an imposing 554 after Chandimal notched an unbeaten 206 and Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis all passed fifty.

Australia then completely collapsed to 151 all out in their second innings, with Smith falling to Jayasuriya lbw for nought. The 33-year-old decided to review the decision after a conversation with Labuschagne, only for ball tracking to show he was plumb, with the ball set to crash into middle stump.

And Smith was roundly criticised for the review, with former Victorian captain Darren Berry tweeting: "That is a very poor review need to be accountable and honest at both ends irrespective of the player absolutely Plumb"

Commentator and journalist Adam Collins added: "I've seen a lot of bad reviews - they happen. But Smith's is one of the worst. Totally lacking in broader match awareness with so many batters to follow and fielders around the bat."

Fans were also particularly critical of Smith's decision to review, with @DaveNeil1414 tweeting: "There's people living in the shadows of Machu Picchu who've never seen a cricket ball bowled who would've identified that as plumb. Steve Smith somehow didn't. A desperate and selfish review."

@jwoods101 added: "That's the most selfish review I have ever seen by Steve Smith." @wtball73, meanwhile, jokingly compared Smith to former Australia star Shane Watson who became notorious for poor reviews.

"Well that's an LBW review that Watto would have done," he wrote. "Poor call from Steve Smith there."
