Steve Smith becomes 15th Australian cricketer to play 100 Tests

NEW DELHI: Dynamic batter Steve Smith on Thursday became the 15th Australian cricketer to reach the milestone of 100 Test matches. Smith achieved this feat during the third Ashes Test against England at Headingley in Leeds.

Known for his swashbuckling style of batting, Smith is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Test batters of his generation. In his 99 matches so far, he has amassed an impressive total of 9,113 runs at an average of 59.56.

This includes an impressive tally of 32 centuries and 37 half-centuries. Notably, Smith will also join an elite group of players who have played 50 or more Tests and maintained an average of at least 59, a distinction held by only three individuals in the history of the game.

Currently, Australia's "hundred club" consists of only 15 cricketers, and Smith will join an even more exclusive group as one of just three batters to achieve both the 50 or more Tests milestone and the average of 59 benchmark.

Smith made his debut for Australia against Pakistan in 2010. Although he didn't make a memorable impact with his batting in that match, he showcased his all-round skills by taking three wickets while conceding 51 runs in his maiden Test appearance.
