Australia have confirmed that batsman Steve Smith will not play in the third Ashes Test after suffering a concussion at Lord's.
The former skipper, who has been Australia's standout performer with scores of 144, 142 and 92 in his three innings to date, was hit on the neck by a bouncer from England's Jofra Archer during Saturday's play.
Despite returning to the field he gave an unsteady performance, uncharacteristically missing a straight ball to fall lbw then calling for a review at the same time as walking to the pavilion.
And after passing the initial batch of medical tests Smith was later diagnosed with a mild concussion and was ruled out of the remainder of the match.
Smith declared his intention to play at Headingley provided he was passed fit by medics but given most guidelines on return-to-play protocols that always seemed unlikely.
And so it has proved with Cricket Australia confirming on Tuesday morning the news that he will play no part with the Test beginning in just 48 hours.
Smith did not train with the rest of his teammates on Tuesday with Marnus Labuschagne, who was used as Smith's concussion replacement on Sunday, now likeliest to come in.
