Steve Round confirms he has joined Mikel Arteta at Arsenal

Steve Round is Mikel Arteta's new assistant head coach.

The former Everton and Manchester United assistant manager has taken up the post of assistant head coach at Arsenal.

The appointment has not been confirmed by the Gunners as yet, but has been confirmed by the man himself.

Speaking to Talksport, he said: "Mikel called me in the week and asked me if I would join his staff and I jumped at the chance straight asway.

"It's a great opportunity at a magnificent football club and just having brief conversations with Mikel I think he's going to be a really, really top manager.

"It's a bold decision because he's young and it's his first time, but having spoken to him he sounds to me like a really experienced guy already.

"I had the privilege of coaching him as player at Everton and he was an outstanding professional and it's great to be back."

Round was in the stands alongside Arteta and Arsenal's technical director Edu for the 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday, leading to speculation that he had joined the Spaniard in north London.

He started his coaching career with Steve McClaren at Middlesbrough, before following him to the England national team.

Round spent five years working under David Moyes at Everton and then joined Moyes when he moved to Manchester United in 2013.

He has also spent two years as director of football at Aston Villa, leaving the club in 2018.
