Steve Morrow set for promotion as Arsenal continue sporting director search

Steve Morrow is set for a major promotion as part of a shake-up at Arsenal.

The former Northern Ireland international will form part of the new sporting structure the club want to put in place to support manager Unai Emery.

Morrow, 48, is currently head of youth scouting but will now take on a role alongside scout Francis Cagigao who is also set for a bigger role behind the scenes.

The duo will form part of a three-man team with Arsenal still looking for an external candidate who will become the sporting director.

Former Sevilla talent-spotter Monchi appeared to be the hot favourite for the job. He quit a position at Roma and looked to be heading to the Emirates – only to return to southern Spain and link up with his former club this week.

That shock move left the Gunners’ director of football Raul Sanllehi seeking an alternative and his former Barcelona colleagues Antoni Zubizaretta and Robert Fernandez were tipped for positions at the north London club.

However, it appears that Arsenal will promote a number of people from within, and Morrow will play a big part in the new set up.

The ex-midfielder has been working for the Gunners for the past 11 years in a variety of roles.

He returned to the club in 2008 and has worked his way up to the position of head of youth scouting.

However, this new role is a major advancement for Morrow who is best remembered as a player for injuring himself after scoring the winner in the 1993 League Cup final.

Morrow scored his first goal for the Gunners against the Owls and then was hoisted aloft by Tony Adams who then dropped him, breaking his team-mate’s arm in the process.
