Steve McManaman ranks Tottenham, Arsenal and Man Utd after Gareth Bale return

Gareth Bale's return to Tottenham elevates them above Manchester United according to Steve McManaman.

The Welshman swapped north London for Madrid seven years ago but made a high profile move back in the summer.

Bale's time in Real Madrid was mixed despite amassing a hugely impressive haul of medals that includes four Champions League wins.

Jose Mourinho's remit was to deliver Champions League football, but there are quiet whispers that they could mount a title challenge.

Their impressive start is in stark contrast to that experienced by the Red Devils - a team they beat 6-1 at Old Trafford.

And McManaman reckons they are at least on a par with neighbours Arsenal - who have already lost four games this term.

LaLiga ambassador McManaman, speaking at an event for LiveScore, said: "I definitely think he can help Tottenham qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season.

"When you look at the Premier League this year - are they better than Arsenal? They're certainly not worse than Arsenal.

"Are they better than Manchester United? Well, yes for me they are, given the way they're playing.

"I think the business that Mourinho has done has been good, when you look at the players he's bought in and the players he's let go.

"He's a bit more time to focus. He'll certainly have them defensively stronger than they were and mentally stronger.

"As I've said, if Gareth stays fit then I certainly think they'll quality for the UEFA Champions League."

Bale scored his first goal since returning recently - a late winner against Brighton.

Mourinho was slow to embed the Welshman but gave him a start alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min last time out at West Brom.

Kane's late goal ensured the three points and sent Tottenham top, albeit for a short time.

But they remain one point off leaders Leicester and their firepower in attack will almost certainly keep them in contention.
