BT Sport co-commentator Steve McManaman says he cannot understand how Jordan Pickford was not sent off for his horror tackle on Virgil van Dijk in the early stages of Everton's game against Liverpool.
Just ten minutes into the match the Dutch defender was clattered by the Everton goalkeeper as he attacked a free-kick.
Van Dijk was adjudged to be offside but VAR still looked at the decision and decided not to penalise Pickford.
Van Dijk, however, had to be replaced by Joe Gomez as he was injured from the incident, and McManaman thinks Pickford was lucky to get away without punishment.
"The challenge here on the Van Dijk injury... I'm very surprised because he could have easily been sent off for this challenge," McManaman said.
"I'm very surprised that it's all just been forgotten about in the offside situation."
Liverpool took the lead in the match early on when Sadio Mane slammed home Andy Robertson's cross after just three minutes.
The hosts responded on 19 minutes, however, when Michael Keane headed in from James Rodriguez's corner, and the teams went in level at the break.
McManaman wasn't the only person baffled by the decision not to sent Pickford off.
Piers Morgan tweeted: "If Pickford did that in the street, he'd be arrested for assault. Ridiculous he wasn't sent off."
Everton are looking to win their first Merseyside Derby for exactly ten years as well as continuing their perfect start to the season, with the Toffees having won all six of their games so far this campaign.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are attempting to bounce back from their humiliating 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break.
