Steve McManaman gives Steven Gerrard Newcastle advice as Rangers boss told to park Liverpool dream for 'new Manchester City'

Liverpool legend Steve McManaman has told old pal Steven Gerrard to park his Kop dream and consider joining "the next Manchester City" at Newcastle.

The Rangers boss is reportedly among the leading candidates to replace Steve Bruce if the new big money Toon owners decide to sack the incumbent manager.

He still has a job on his hands at Gers with the importance of a potential automatic Champions League spot turning up the heat on this Premiership season and his first title defence.

But former Real Madrid midfielder McManaman, a winner of both English cups at Anfield, reckons the carrot of St James' Park will be too good to turn down if Gerrard is asked.

Now a pundit with BT Sport, he believes Newcastle are on their way to becoming the new incarnation of Man City, who were turned into a global footballing superpower by their Abu Dhabi investors in the late 2000s.

Writing in his horseracing.net column, McManaman said: "If my old mate Steven Gerrard is approached to succeed Steve Bruce as the manager of Newcastle United it would be very hard for Steven to turn down.

"If what we’re being led to believe, that Newcastle United are going to be turned into the next Manchester City with all this money and power and glamour, it could be an absolutely brilliant opportunity to take that job.

"I think it’s an amazing opportunity if these new owners say, ‘we’d like you to take this job as our manager and we’ve got £500million to spend.’

"If that was Steven - and I know his principal job will be to manage Liverpool in the end - it would be an incredible opportunity and one that would be very difficult to turn down.

"If these owners want to invest and turn this club into one of the best in England, in Europe, how could you say no?"
