Steve McClaren has admitted he was impressed with Dundee United ’s ambitions but it comes at the wrong time for him.
The Tannadice outfit were hopeful that they could persuade the former England boss to take the post, but he has knocked it back.
McClaren was still swithering on Wednesday with his close associates making calls to find out more about United and the club.
The 59-year-old, however, has since decided to pull out of the running.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McClaren said: "Tony and I had a great meeting regarding the manager’s job at Dundee United.
“I am very impressed with the club’s structure, philosophy and ambition and I am sure they will be very successful.
“I have a great desire to be managing and coaching again and it is disappointing that this chance comes at the wrong time for me.
“I wish Tony and the board the best of luck in bringing the club and its fans the success they deserve.”
McClaren had met with sporting director Tony Asghar on Monday and held further discussions, but has decided the Tannadice post is not for him.
United sporting director Asghar has other names on his shortlist, including Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon and a couple of others.
He and chairman Mark Ogren are now looking at those options closely.
The Scottish Football Association’s performance director Malky Mackay has also been interviewed and remains in contention.
Other former United players, like Jon Daly, who could work with Austin MacPhee, and Aberdeen coach Barry Robson has also had informal discussions with Asghar.
United have been on the lookout for a new boss since Robbie Neilson quit for Hearts last month.
Assistant coaches Gordon Forrest and Lee McCulloch have continued to take pre-season, although both are wanted by Neilson at Tynecastle.
