Steve Martin’s porch swing is the timeless outdoor furniture upgrade designers swear by – and you can get the look for under $90

Steve Martin.

Porch swings are, in many ways, the ultimate piece of outdoor furniture. Rustic, chic, and playful, they bring movement and a dynamic nature to any front or backyard.

Take Steve Martin's porch swing as a fantastic example. The Only Murders in the Building star recently shared a clip of himself playing the banjo on his white, bench-style porch swing, decorated with a simple, purple cushion (which conveniently matches the loose flower petals strewn on the ground).

The bench is not only a great congregating space, but it also provides a focal point to what could otherwise be a dead space in front of the home. Experts agree that porch swings are one of the best pieces of outdoor furniture to invest in.

Design insiders say porch swings are perfect for those who like to host and entertain guests, making them summer staples.

'Swinging patio furniture adds a playful, relaxing, and nostalgic touch to outdoor spaces,' explains Lindsay Schleis, VP of business development for POLYWOOD. 'Porch swings in particular can transform a typical patio space it into a cozy outdoor oasis. They instantly create an inviting place to relax with a good book and a cup of coffee for private unwinding time, or a favorite beverage and good conversation with loved ones.'

When decorating around a porch swing, Lindsay suggests considering placement first.

'To start with, I recommend leaving a minimum of three feet in front of and behind your swing and a foot or more on either side, so you don’t knock into tables or walls,' she explains. 'Stylistically, consider adding a weather-resistant outdoor rug under the swing to further define the area and achieve that coveted indoor vibe outdoors.'

She continues, 'Small durable side tables placed to either side of the swing add both form and function to place drinks, books, or devices while enjoying the soothing swinging motion of your furniture.'

She also notes that colorful cushions, like Steve's purple option, are fantastic for infusing your space with some vibrancy. 'As with most outdoor furniture, weather-resistant cushions can add a pop of color to tie in your overall patio aesthetic. A throw blanket goes a long way to completing the cozy look while offering comfort on breezy evenings.'

Finally, consider implementing some greenery around swinging outdoor furniture for a whimsical, natural feel.

'Large plants give your swing area a lush natural touch,' Lindsay says. 'Look for large hanging plants as well as potted plants whose containers can tie into your theme and add an artistic flair. Pergolas are having a moment in outdoor design, so consider adding an arch with vines to give your swing location a romantic European feel.'
