Steve Longa added to the Lions roster, Marcus Gilchrist released

Marcus Gilchrist, we hardly knew ye…

The Detroit Lions made a roster move on Saturday in advance of the Week 8 visit from the New York Giants. The Lions added linebacker Steve Longa to the active 53-man roster from the practice squad.

To make room for Longa, the Lions dumped safety Marcus Gilchrist. Detroit signed Gilchrist on Thursday after the Quandre Diggs trade.

Longa has been with the Lions since the 2016 season, bouncing between the active roster, practice squad and injured reserve. He’s an inside LB known for his tackling ability against the run, something the Lions have been deficient in throughout the season.

With Saquon Barkley and the Giants coming to town, adding a physical LB makes sense.
