Steve Howey on Newcastle United takeover tension: From cans in the garden to Nandos tip-offs

Steve Howey has spoken of the perils for pundits who make a prediction on Newcastle United's takeover completion date.

The former England and United defender claimed that Mike Ashley had agreed to sell the club two years ago on Radio Newcastle's popular phone-in.

On the back of another tip-off, another ex-Newcastle star Olivier Bernard stated he'd been told a deal would be completed at 5pm yesterday.

Howey, speaking to Newcastle Legends' MD Steve Wraith, said: "We've all been guilty of that.

"Sometimes you hear something from someone you trust.

"Mine was, and I said it.

"Then, of course, it went mental really.

"Even now I get daft posts on Twitter saying they've seen me at Nando's or they seen me doing the gardening giving the thumbs up with a can in my hand saying: 'It's on'.

"I still get that.

"Olly did the same, we all just want it done.

"But it obviously will take time."

On another day of Twitter tension, there were also claims that the United squad had been called into a room and told it was a done deal yesterday.

But Howey said: "I think we will hear an announcement from both parties.

"Then it will be breaking news.

"As as we know 100% it will come up on the bottom of our screens."
