Steve Evans on the 'struggle' with Massimo Cellino's decision making and his broken Leeds United promise

Steve Evans has admitted that people 'struggled to understand' some of the decisions Massimo Cellino made at Leeds United.

Evans was hired by the Italian in October 2015 and was kept on for the remainder of the 2015-16 campaign, following Uwe Rosler's 12-match stint in charge at Elland Road.

Leeds meandered to a 13th-place finish that season, with Evans being let go after his contract was not renewed - despite claiming he had a verbal agreement to the contray.

"He could make decisions people struggled to understand," Evans told the Scottish Sun.

"Massimo made me Leeds manager and I'll always be grateful. But he said he was taking up an option for me to stay another year. We shook hands on it and then he changed his mind."

Despite the circumstances of his departure, Evans insists he remains proud to have been at the club.

"It was a huge honour for me. I'll always be proud. It's a great club that deserves to be in the Premier League."

Evans has managed more than 1,000 matches, but it is one player from his 38-match stint at Leeds that he rates above all others he has managed when asked.

"Lewis Cook. He went from Leeds to Bournemouth for £9million."
