Steve Cram in BBC commentary box as Commonwealth Games history made in 400m hurdles

Steve Cram witnessed a huge Commonwealth Games first on Saturday night as Guernsey got their first ever track medal at the event in the 400m hurdles.

No stranger to a world famous athletics competition, legendary middle distance runner Steve was in the BBC commentary box for another packed night of track and field events at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium.

While England secured all three medals over in the dining as Dan Goodfellow took gold in the men's 3m springboard, there was plenty of athletics action to take in. There was an exciting women's 800m, as England's Keely Hodgkinson took silver behind Mary Moraa with Scotland's Laura Muir taking bronze.

And there was more action on the track as the finalists lined up for the men's 400m hurdles. The race was won by Kyron McMaster, who took gold with 48.93 seconds. Jamaica's Jaheel Hyde got the silver and just behind him, Alastair Chalmers made Commonwealth Games history as he took the bronze for Guernsey.

Reacting to the massive first and Guernsey's near successes in the past, commentator Steve commented: "Lee Merrion, I remember Lee very well, was 8th in the marathon for Guernsey and I think they've had a sixth place before, but never a medal, only in shooting and lawn bowls in the Commonwealth Games."

As the camera focused in on Alastair hugging loved ones in the crowd, Steve continued: "Look at him, Alastair Chalmers, he can not believe it! Wonderful scenes."

The 400m hurdles was followed by the men's 200m, where England's Zarnell Hughes took silver.
