Steve Cooper sets himself ‘difficult’ Nottingham Forest challenge before Leeds United showdown

Steve Cooper insists he is as motivated as ever to guide Nottingham Forest after a “difficult” result against Bournemouth. Despite storming to a two-goal lead at half-time, the Reds capitulated to lose on home soil for the second time this season.

Forest intrigued football supporters across the country with their lavish summer spending. Over £150million was spent on 19 new arrivals to help Cooper & Co keep the club in the Premier League.

A pick-and-mix of players have arrived at the City Ground, with sought-after stars like Jesse Lingard opting to join the newly-promoted side. Leeds United await Forest next weekend aiming to return to winning ways themselves after a disastrous 5-2 defeat at Brentford.

The two giants of English football have not met since February 2020 when the Whites lost 2-0 in a top-of-the-table encounter. Ahead of their trip to Elland Road, Cooper spoke of his desire to guide Forest through their sticky patch.

“They all hurt,” Cooper told BBC Radio Nottingham after the Bournemouth defeat. “But since we’ve been here, things have gone really well. It’s one thing managing a club that’s going well; what’s important to me is that I show I can manage a club that might go through some sticky periods.

“That’s what a proper manager does - and I want to become that. I’ll be looking at myself, what’s gone on this week… and aim to do better. It starts with me. Football management is about highs and lows. Good moments and difficult moments. We’ve had a difficult week, let’s not hide away from that.

“For me, now, I need to show everybody - most importantly, the supporters - that I can manage this club after a difficult week. That’s important to me because it’s easy to manage after a good week.”
