Steve Cooper sends Lewis O'Brien message as Nottingham Forest transfer finally confirmed

Lewis O'Brien's transfer saga is finally at an end after Nottingham Forest officially confirmed his short-term loan to DC United.

The midfielder was left in limbo after his January move to Blackburn Rovers fell through on deadline day as the paperwork was not delivered on time. The Championship club appealed to the EFL, but were denied.

A move to Major League Soccer was mooted as the transfer window is still open in the United States. After almost two months of sitting on the sidelines after being left out of the Reds' Premier League squad for the second half of the season, he has now moved Stateside.

The terms of the deal will see him join Wayne Rooney's team on loan until mid-July. There is an option-to-buy clause included in the deal, just as there was in the proposed Rovers transfer.

"Lewis deserves this opportunity to go and play football," Forest manager Steve Cooper said after the loan was confirmed. "Everyone knows about his situation, so now he is able to go and get some games under his belt between now and the end of the season and it will be a real positive for him. It will be a great experience and we wish him well."

O'Brien joined Forest last summer from Huddersfield Town after being on the losing side of the 2022 Championship play-off final. The 24-year-old did not start another Premier League game after being substituted at halftime of the 4-0 defeat to Leicester City in October.
