Steve Cooper's transfer admission and the Newport County display that highlighted Swansea City concerns

Swansea City's Carabao Cup exit to Newport County left fans hugely concerned ahead of their Championship opener this weekend.

The Swans kick-start their league campaign against Preston at Deepdale just seven days after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Michael Flynn's side at Rodney Parade.

Steve Cooper was without several first team stars due to the international break, although the visitors still named a strong line-up to face the Exiles in the Carabao Cup first round encounter.

And while Cooper has said the performance against the League Two side may have further highlighted the need to strengthen certain areas of his squad, the Swansea head coach believes the side he selected was still strong enough to deliver against Newport.

"We had an experienced team out and one that was more than capable of coping with the game," said Cooper.

"Maybe it did highlight certain areas that I've said we need to strengthen, and we are looking to do that. It would be a positive if that can happen.

"But don't take anything away from the game today, we had enough on the pitch to deal with a game of this calibre."

Swansea have already secured season-long loan deals for Marc Guehi, Freddie Woodman and Morgan Gibbs-White.

They have also signed Jamal Lowe and Korey Smith on a permanent basis.

Cooper is keen to add at least one striker to his ranks in the summer transfer window while he also wants to recruit a centre-back.

But when asked if the Jack Army can expect news of further incomings in the near future, Cooper simply responded: "Nothing to report at the moment."

The Swans face Preston in Lancashire at 3pm on Saturday before hosting Birmingham City at the Liberty Stadium seven days later in what will be their first home match of the 2020/21 campaign.
