Steve Cooper's stirring reminder for Swansea City players and the motivation behind their play-off bid

Steve Cooper reminded his Swansea City players of the bumper following his side had in the stands for the reverse fixture with Bristol City ahead of their 1-0 triumph over the Robins at the Liberty Stadium.

The Swans were held to a goalless draw at Ashton Gate in September, although they were backed by more than 2,000 fans over the Severnside Bridge.

Cooper's men delivered the goods in South Wales this time out as Connor Roberts' first goal of the campaign earned them all three points against Dean Holden's men.

However, as has been the case for the last eight Championship fixtures, no fans were present owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

But Cooper has revealed his players were motivated by the Swansea faithful as they kept themselves in the hunt for a play-off spot by beating Bristol City.

"You can tell they were motivated, it's just over the water for them," said the head coach.

"I said to the players before the game, when we went there early on in the season, you could see that the supporters were really up for it.

"I thought this game really matters to our supporters and I reminded them of that before the game, and that they still can't come to the stadium plus life isn't easy at the moment for a lot of people.

"So I said, 'let's go and make sure that, whoever is watching, we make them happy', and I think we did that."

Roberts' strike in added time in the first half ensured Swansea remain just three points adrift of sixth-placed Cardiff, although there is just one match left to play of the regular season.

It means the Swans must beat Reading on Wednesday and hope relegation candidates Hull City can secure all three points against the Bluebirds, or that Nottingham Forest have a monumental collapse in their clashes with Barnsley and Stoke City.

And Cooper says his side will do all they can in the coming days to boost their chances of securing a win at the Madejski Stadium.

"It goes into the final day and anything can happen. We've just got to take care of our business," he said.

"I said before this game, all we can do is focus on getting six points from the two games. We've got three, we'll recover now and get ready for Reading and hopefully play as well as we did today."

And on his side's performance against the Robins, Cooper commented: "I thought it was a really good game, two teams playing to win.

"We took a little bit in the first half to settle down, but once we did, I thought we played some excellent football.

"We played through the lines, looked a real threat, particularly with Jake Bidwell and Connor Roberts, and I really liked the looks of us.

"I thought the goal was coming, and I'm pleased for Connor Roberts, he gets in the box enough.

"Second half, we were penned in a little bit, and I don't know if it was a penalty or not, but it was a bit of a lifeline when it hit the post. I thought we managed their numerous attacking players really well.

"I don't think Erwin [Mulder] has had a major save to make. We were good for it."

The Swans' clash with Reading gets underway at 7:30pm on Wednesday night.
