Steve Cooper's Middlesbrough vs Cardiff City expectation as boss reveals Swansea City's play-off aim

Steve Cooper fully expects Middlesbrough to give Cardiff City a run for their money when the sides meet at the Riverside Stadium tomorrow.

The Swans will hope Neil Warnock's men can do them a favour by beating the Bluebirds in the North East of England, with Cooper's side aiming to secure all three points against Bristol City at the same time.

And the Swansea head coach says Boro's precarious position in the Championship table means they'll be scrapping for their lives when it comes to locking horns with Warnock's former club.

"I expect nothing else but for Middlesbrough to give everything that they've got because of the situation they're in," he said.

"That's no disrespect to them, they're going to need to win aren't they, for a different cause to what we're trying to do and one or two others around us.

"I'd be surprised if anybody down the bottom is not giving 100% to try and get a result."

Swansea currently trail sixth-placed Cardiff by three points with just two matches left to play.

It means they will be out of the running for a top six spot if their result against the Robins is bettered by that of Cardiff.

But Cooper believes there could be more twists and turns in the final days of the 2019/20 regular season.

“There are a variety of things that could happen that can go for and against you," he said.

"With that in mind, I think it’s very important to concentrate on the two games and get six points. That’s what we’re aiming for.

"It starts with a tough game tomorrow against Bristol City who have picked up points in the last few weeks. But we have got to aim to take six points, that’s for sure.

"We keep saying it, the season has gone that way from day one. There's been loads of twists and turns. It’s impossible to change things. There might be one or two in the next week."

But when asked if he'll keep an eye on results elsewhere during Swansea's clash with the Robins, Cooper responded: "I won’t be. I want to win the game. That’s what we’ll be aiming to do. Whatever happens after that, we’ll deal with it when it comes. "

Kick-off against Bristol City is at 3pm on Saturday.
