Steve Cooper's brutally honest assessment of Swansea City's miserable defeat to Stoke City

Steve Cooper said Swansea City "fell short" with their performance levels in the 2-1 defeat to Stoke City at the Liberty Stadium.

The Swans went ahead inside the opening minute as Andre Ayew lashed home his first home league goal for the club in more than three years.

But efforts from former Swan Sam Clucas and Scott Hogan earned the Potters their first Championship win of the 2019/20 campaign.

And Cooper admits the Swans didn't do the basics well enough against Nathan Jones' side.

“The result was poor and the performance was equally as poor,” he said.

“We fell short today with our performance levels and did not do what we aim to do in every game.

“Ultimately it cost us, we turned the ball over too many times, we didn’t press well enough.

“We wanted to show Stoke into certain areas, but when we had them there we let them out come out.

“When you don’t do the basics well enough it will cost you, and that was the case. It was as black and white as that.

"There were lots of things in our game that were not at the level required.

"I thought in the end we did not do enough to get a result from the game. We know why. We did not play to our identity. The reason we play a certain way is because we think it will win games.

"We did not do that today and we got the result as it was."

Defeat to the bet365 Stadium outfit means Swansea are without a win on their home turf in the league in three outings, picking up just one point in that run.

But Cooper brushed away concerns that the Swans are unable to maintain high performance levels on their own patch.

"I think this performance stands alone in terms of how it was," he added.

"I don't think it was similar to other performances. We fell short in too many ways today. It was a bit of a one off in terms of pattern.

"What I do know is that it was a game before we expected to win, and should have won, but we didn't make that the case, but we'll only look at ourselves."

The Swans take on Barnsley at Oakwell on October 19 in their first match after the international break.
