Steve Cooper reveals what he 'really liked' from first Nottingham Forest victory

Nottingham Forest secured their first win under new head coach Steve Cooper as they came from a goal down to beat Barnsley at Oakwell last night.

Striker Cauley Woodrow had put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot after Tobias Figueiredo was punished for a foul as the Tykes took a slender lead into the break.

But after the restart, Forest produced a magnificent display as Philip Zinckernagel tapped in the equaliser before Brennan Johnson put the visitors ahead.

Lewis Grabban then gave Forest some breathing space when he guided in Alex Mighten's cross.

Here's all the reaction from Forest's first win under their new boss.

Player ratings

Steve Cooper picked up his first victory as Nottingham Forest manager as his side overturned a 1-0 deficit to triumph 3-1 at Barnsley.

Cooper’s substitutions worked a treat as the Reds hit back in the second half through Philip Zinckernagel, Brennan Johnson and Lewis Grabban.

After picking up a point in his first game in charge, when his team came from behind to draw 1-1 with Millwall, new boss Cooper was looking to notch a first win of his tenure at Oakwell.

He made one change to the starting XI from Saturday’s game at the City Ground, with Zinckernagel coming in for Grabban.

The latter picked up a thigh injury against the Lions, but was fit enough to be included on the bench for the midweek clash.

His absence saw Zinckernagel lead the line as the Reds stuck with the same 3-4-3 formation deployed in their past two outings, utilising wing-backs for added attacking threat.

Cooper's reaction

Boss Steve Cooper admitted it was a risk to bring Lewis Grabban off the bench an hour into Nottingham Forest’s clash with Barnsley.

But the striker’s introduction as a substitute helped turn the game in the Reds’ favour as they claimed their first victory under their new manager, triumphing 3-1.

The Tykes had taken the lead through a Cauley Woodrow penalty in the first half, but hit back after the break through Philip Zinckernagel, Brennan Johnson and Grabban.

The latter had picked up a thigh problem in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Millwall, which had made him a doubt for the trip to Oakwell.

And Cooper said: “It was a slight risk to give him any sort of minutes.
