Nottingham Forest fans are digesting Steve Cooper’s first day as head coach after succeeding Chris Hughton at the helm.

Cooper took training for the first time this morning as the team began preparations for his first match in charge against Millwall on Saturday.

Nottingham Forest have followed a similar path with too many transfers for too much money, but largely thanks to an owner with deep pockets they have avoided a similar fate.

More recently, they have realised it was time to plot a change in course, with a younger, cheaper squad gradually being assembled - a squad of players with the potential for high resale values with space for academy graduates to flourish.

Chris Hughton was not the right man to execute that plan. It's not all his fault.

He was brought into fight a fire in the short-term and then win promotion in the slightly longer term.

After all, Hughton had won promotion twice before, while one of his predecessors, Aitor Karanka had done so as well.

Neil Lennon says Steve Cooper needs to be given time and full control of recruitment at Nottingham Forest.

Cooper has been officially installed as the Reds’ new head coach following the sacking of Chris Hughton last week.

The managerial revolving door has been spinning on an all too regular basis at the City Ground over the last decade.

With that in mind, former Celtic manager Lennon, who had a spell on loan on at Forest during his playing days, is cautious about Cooper’s prospects of success.
