Steve Coogan to play Jimmy Savile in new BBC drama The Reckoning

BAFTA-winning actor Steve Coogan, well known and loved for creating Alan Partridge, will be playing Jimmy Savile in a new drama about his life.

The BBC drama, called The Reckoning, will look at Savile's notorious story from working-class beginnings to becoming a huge British TV star and then the truth about the horrific abuse he committed.

Using information and working with people who were affected by Savile, the drama will aim to tell their stories with sensitivity and respect, especially looking at the sexual abuse he committed and how his victims tried to stop him.

Talking about the role Steve said: "To play Jimmy Savile was not a decision I took lightly. Neil McKay has written an intelligent script tackling sensitively an horrific story which - however harrowing - needs to be told."

The drama is aiming to show that Savile was able to commit so many awful assaults without being stopped and to help make sure this never happens again.

Savile used his connections with many high-profile organisations, such as hospitals, prisons, and the BBC, to hide his crimes and remain uncaught.

The abuse committed by Savile had been taking place for decades from the 1960s to 2010 and during the investigation by Scotland Yard, they investigated more than 400 lines of inquiry based on 300 testimonies against Savile.

This then lead to investigations at the BBC, NHS, and Department of Health, and in 2014 Jeremy Hunt, the then Secretary of State for Health issued an apology to the patients of the NHS who were abused by Savile.

There is no air date for The Reckoning yet.
