Steve Clarke takes Scotland pay cut as SFA puts emergency financial measures in place

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has agreed to take a wage cut as part of a massive coronavirus cost saving purge by game’s authorities.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell and his SPFL counterpart Neil Doncaster have also had their salaries slashed by the same 10 per cent margin while staff across both bodies have been put on furlough leave while the crisis forces football into lock-down.

Workers on Hampden’s sixth floor were stunned today by the emergency measures which have been put in place for a minimum of three months but which could be continued until such times as the game in this country gets back to its feet.

Record Sport understands Doncaster’s annual £300k income will, in fact, be reduced by an additional 30 per cent as all bonus payments and salary increases have also been scrapped as part of the drastic action plan.

All non-executive directors on the board of both bodies, including the likes of SFA president Rod Petrie, will also be hit in the pocket. They have agreed to pay cuts of 20 per cent and have agreed to defer the other 80 per cent until the crisis caused by the pandemic has eased.

It’s understood more than 50 per cent of the SFA’s current office staff will be furloughed onto the UK government’s job protection scheme which will cover 80 per cent of their wages.

Those who do remain in work will also be hit with the 10 per cent across-the-board cut which national boss Clarke has already agreed to accept.

The manager was supposed to be leading his team into crunch play-offs for Euro 2020 last week but has not taken charge of his team since overseeing a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan at Hampden in November.
