Steve Clarke shows what Scotland job means to him as he gets new era underway

Steve Clarke beams with pride as he gets his Scotland reign underway for real ahead of the Euro qualifying double header with Cyprus and Belgium.

The new national team manager admitted last week he'd probably have to calm himself down ahead of his first training session such was his excitement to get down to work.

And so it seemed today as the new management team of Clarke , Alex Dyer and Steven Reid put their first squad through their paces at the Oriam in Edinburgh.

Clarke left Kilmarnock to take over from axed Alex McLeish last month after a stunning season in which he led the Ayrshiremen into Europe.

He has had little time to settle into Hampden with the crucial qualifiers on Saturday and Tuesday as he looks to salvage the horror start to the Group I campaign.

His first squad included call-ups for Killie duo Greg Taylor and Eamonn Brophy. And they were among the troops at a damp Oriam this morning.

Stars including Callum McGregor , Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Fraser and Scott McTominay were also looking to impress.

Hull goalkeeper David Marshall was back in action having been recalled and John McGinn looked like he hadn't stopped beaming for a week after playing a starring role in Aston Villa's Play-Off Final victory last Monday.

Skipper Andy Robertson - fresh from being crowned a European champion with Liverpool on Saturday night - has been granted an extra 24 hours off to recover from the Mersey celebrations.

The 25-year-old will join up with the squad Tuesday.

Robertson said last night: “I’ll celebrate this success in the appropriate manner because we’ve got two big qualifiers coming up, which are important.

“A Champions League win doesn’t come around that often, so I have to enjoy it. But I’ll be ready to go on Saturday, I want to play.

“There are no worries over that but I’ll savour this first.”
