Steve Clarke sent Ryan Porteous Hibs message as Tam McManus makes Gary Caldwell comparison

Tam McManus reckons Ryan Porteous is destined for a Scotland cap in the near future.

That's because he's the type of defender Scotland have missed since Gary Caldwell.

Porteous has enjoyed a strong start to the season in Leith, playing every minute of Hibs' flying start as they top the Premiership table after four games.

The 22-year-old has marshalled Jack Ross' team to clean sheets against Ross County and Livingston and McManus, who played for Hibs for eight years until 2005, reckons he's just the type of ball-playing defender Steve Clarke is crying out for.

Porteous recently made his 100th appearance for Hibs and seems set to star for the national team one day.

And McManus said on PLZ: "Porteous has had a really good start to the season. Clarke has got to be thinking about him.

"Your centre-halves are massively important in any team. They start your attack, they start your build-up.

"If you've got two who just launch it, you're never going to play football. You need guys like Porteous.

"Gary Caldwell was one who took a lot of stick - for Celtic and Scotland - but he was very good coming out with the ball.

"Porteous is the same."
