Steve Clarke refuses to rule out Scotland job but queries whether he's a candidate

Steve Clarke admits he would love to become Scotland manager one day but remained tight-lipped on whether he's keen to replace Alex McLeish.

The Kilmarnock boss is highly-regarded and the 55-year-old is one of the bookies favourites for the national team vacancy but says he wasn't contacted last time around.

McLeish was axed on Thursday after just 14 months in charge and Clarke admits managing his country remains a goal in his career.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool coach revealed recently returning to England remains an option with his family living south of the border.

But the Scotland job offers a level of flexibility which isn't afforded to club managers who have little time away from the training ground.

And the Killie boss did little to quell speculation when asked if he would be keen to make the switch to international football.

Clarke said: "At some stage, whether it’s now or not, the media can talk about that.

"I’m focused on the Kilmarnock job until the end of the season.

"Nobody has been in touch with me since January, from anyone.

"I have got nothing to say whether they get in touch or not.

:They will get together a list of candidates and they'll decide what they want to do.

"It's not that long ago since the Scotland job was available and they didn't speak to me then, so I have got no reason to think they'll speak now.

“I am very happy here at Kilmarnock with great staff. We have five massive games coming up. With all due respect to the Scotland, I don’t want to talk about them again. My focus is here."
