Steve Clarke makes Scotland points admission as he targets second place in group

Scotland manager Steve Clarke has admitted that now is the time for the national side to get points on the board following the disappointing 2-0 defeat to Denmark.

Two goals inside a minute were enough for the Danes to secure a victory against Steve Clarke's side.

After four matches in World Cup qualifying Scotland currently occupy fourth place, sitting behind Denmark, Austria and Israel.

Steve Clarke is adamant that his side can rise to the occasion against Moldova and get much needed points recorded if there is to be a repeat of an appearance for the national side at the next major tournament in Qatar.

Speaking to the media ahead of tomorrow's match, Clarke believes that his side will be in the mix for qualification come the crunch point of the group. He said: "We know where we are, we know what this week was all about.

"We need points that keep us in contention till the end of the group.

"We know what is at stake and we are always fighting so that come October/November we are in the mix for qualification.

"We need a performance and we need a win against Moldova and that is what we focus on.

Following defeat in Denmark, finishing in top spot looks unlikely for Scotland, with the national side currently sitting seven points behind the runaway leaders.

Clarke insists that his side still have what it takes though to qualify out of the group, he said: "I think you always have to set out to get the maximum you can in any situation and obviously after the last result it is going to be more difficult to be first.

"Is second still available? Very much so, yes. We can definitely get two wins in the next two games, whether we need them or not will be determined as to how the other two games pan out.

"For us it is to focus on doing what we can do, we have to have a positive performance, get a win and three points on the board and see where that takes us.”

Scotland have received a boost for tomorrow's match against Moldova with the news that Aston Villa man John McGinn has returned to training following a spell in isolation.
