Steve Clarke makes Craig Gordon decision as Hearts and Hibs stars learn Scotland fate v Austria

Veteran Hearts stopper Craig Gordon has missed out on a Scotland recall as Steve Clarke’s side take the first steps on the road to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against Austria at Hampden.

The Tartan Army booked a heroic return from the international tournament wilderness late last year when David Marshall saved from Aleksandar Mitrović to clinch a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Serbia in Belgrade, booking a place at this summer's European Championships.

It made the Derby County keeper a national hero, but despite injury has leaving him out of club action recently, Clarke has opted to leave Gordon on the bench in favour of Marshall.

The 38-year-old’s last cap came in a 1-0 defeat to Slovakia in Trnava last November.

At the other end of the experience scale, Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet is among the substitutes after being called into the squad for the first time.

Ex-Hibs star John McGinn starts in midfield, with Lyndon Dykes and Celtic's Ryan Christie leading the line.

The visitors meanwhile have been able to name a strong squad after restrictions were lifted on their Bundesliga group travelling to Scotland for the game.

Bayern Munich’s David Alaba and RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer start for Franco Foda’s side, while rangy forward Ercan Kara arrives with a fearsome scoring record in his homeland.

Scotland XI: Marshall, Robertson, Tierney, Hanley, Hendry, O'Donnell, McTominay, McGinn, Armstrong, Christie, Dykes

Subs: Gordon, McLaughlin, Fleck, McGregor, Gallagher, McKenna, Fraser, Nisbet, Adams, McBurnie, Palmer, McLean

Austria XI: A. Schlager, Alaba, Lienhart, Dragovic, Lainer, X. Schlager, Grillitsch, Baumgartlinger, Ilsanker, Kalajdzic, Grbic

Referee: Carlos del Cerro Grande (ESP)
