Steve Clarke IS Scotland’s next manager as Kilmarnock boss wins the race

Steve Clarke has won the race to be Scotland’s next manager on a three-year contract.

The Kilmarnock boss has beaten off competition from Derek McInnes and Scot Gemmill to take charge of the national team.

Clarke, 55, spent four hours at Hampden on Thursday morning when he was involved in a disciplinary hearing.

But it’s understood he may have also held talks with the SFA over succeeding Alex McLeish, who was sacked on April 18 following the 3-0 humiliation in Kazakhstan.

Clarke was involved in a two-way fight to manage his country with McInnes but emerged victorious after the Aberdeen boss pulled out of the running.

Clarke said: "It is an honour to be appointed Scotland national head coach and I will undertake those responsibilities with pride and commitment.

"It has truly been an honour and privilege to work for Kilmarnock and I will always treasure the moments and memories created here. I am extremely proud of all our achievement during my time in charge and I am especially pleased I was able to play a part in putting a smile on the back of supporters’ faces.

"A manager is nothing without a group of talented players and staff, willing to work hard and listen to instructions so I would like to thank them for their support during my time at Rugby Park.

"I’d like to express my gratitude to the board for all their backing and ask them to support them as they continue to build this fantastic football club."

The coach named the Manager of the Year added: “I firmly believe we have a talented group of players who can achieve success on the international stage. I look forward to working with them and helping them to fulfil those ambitions.

"I appreciate the Scotland supporters have waited a long time for the national team to qualify for a major tournament. Now we have a Women’s World Cup to look forward to in France this summer and it’s my motivation to emulate the success of Shelley Kerr and her squad by leading us to Euro 2020.

“I believe we can qualify and look forward to that journey with the players and the fans, starting against Cyprus and Belgium next month.”

He has dragged a side sitting second bottom of the Premiership when he took over in October 2017 to next season’s Europa League.

Clarke steered Killie to a 2-1 win over Rangers on the final day of the season at the weekend that booked them a third-place finish in the league.

But it will be someone else leading Kilmarnock in Europe, with Clarke now heading to Hampden after he said farewell to the fans at Rugby Park on Sunday.

SFA chief exec Ian Maxwell is thrilled with the appointment. He said: Steve’s pedigree as a coach and manager of the highest regard set him apart in a high-calibre group of candidates. This season’s achievements simply reaffirm the credentials we believe will be of huge benefit to the Scotland national team.

“I am delighted that we now have the country’s deserved Manager of the Year to lead the Scotland National Team and his experience over the past two decades will be integral to rejuvenating our UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying campaign, which resumes next month.

“It was important that we undertook the recruitment process diligently and respectfully, especially given the importance of the final games of the domestic season for Kilmarnock, Steve and his players.

“I would like to thank the Kilmarnock owner, Billy Bowie, and the club in general for their professionalism throughout the recruitment process.”

Clarke’s first match is against Cyprus at Hampden on June 8 as he bids to lead Scotland to Euro 2020.
