Steve Clarke in 'become legends' cry to Scotland stars and offers hope to disappointed few

Steve Clarke has told Scotland's chosen few the power to become legends is in their hands.

The manager named the 26 players tasked with carrying the nation's Euro 2020 hopes on Wednesday, the first group to do so in 23 years.

But neither Clarke nor his players will be content with simply being on the guest list when the whistle blows their opening fixture against Czech Republic at Hampden on June 14.

An dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Serbia last year secured a seat at the table but now it's about proving they belong there.

And if they can do what no other Scotland side has managed and navigate their way to the knockout stages, Clarke is certain they will all go down as icons.

He said: "It's been a feel good story and it's great to be involved in the tournament.

"We want to be competitive. When the boys won in Serbia everyone got a great lift, it was a fantastic feeling.

"All the boys became heroes overnight, if we can get out of the group stage they can become legends.

"So why not aim for that? It's always important to be as competitive as you can be.

"I've always said I felt the group is growing in stature the more caps they get, the more international experience they get, the more confidence they get with results against the bigger and better teams.

"Hopefully we can go there in the summer and cause a few problems for the other teams the group."

The highly-anticipated squad reveal, as was inevitable, provided both elation and disappointment.

Clarke included youngsters Billy Gilmour, David Turnbull and Nathan Patterson but out went recent regulars Liam Palmer and Andy Considine and nor was there space for Lawrence Shankland or Leigh Griffiths.

The gaffer insists it's time for those involved to start dreaming but offered a glimmer of hope to their disappointed compatriots.

He said: "For the ones that have made it, they have to be excited and look forward to the summer and they have to dream.

"They have to embrace the whole situation.

"For the ones that didn’t make it, we have until June 13 for injuries and Covid illness we can bring others into the squad.

"So they have to keep themselves in good shape."
