Steve Clarke calls for Scotland stars to step up and fill 'hero' Lyndon Dykes absence

Relieved Steve Clarke hailed Lyndon Dykes but then insisted Scotland will need to find a new hero to fire them into the World Cup play-offs.

The Scotland striker made it four goals in four games as he netted the winner to floor the Faroes late on in the Torsvollur Stadium.

It means Scotland now need to beat Moldova next month to clinch second spot and Qatar 2022 play-off.

They, however, will have to do it without Dykes and Ryan Christie who are both now suspended after picking up their second booking of the campaign.

Clarke said: “He made a good choice choosing to play for us! I know what I’m getting from Lyndon.

“I know what he brings to the team.

“Sometimes he doesn’t get the credit he deserves but look at the goals he’s scored and the important points that he’s won.

“Everyone wants to be successful. Lyndon is a big part of that.

“I gave him a big hug on Saturday as well. I felt sad for him on Saturday that he missed the penalty.

“I always try and make my players feel good when they come off the pitch.

“He’s scoring important goals for us. There’s no doubt about it.

“He’s attacked the space at the near post well.

“It wasn’t a dissimilar goal to the one he scored on Saturday. He got across the first defender and got the contact.

“You’re a bit nervous when it goes to VAR but thankfully it went our way again.

“When you get to this stage of the competition then you are going to get a lot of the players who will pick up the two yellows.

“It will be the chance for somebody else to be the hero next month.”

Clarke knows Scotland have worked hard to win four games on the bounce and he wants one more in Moldova.

He stated:”We are in a good position but we have worked hard to get into this position. It hasn’t come easy.

“We’ve taken 12 points and it is difficult to win four games in a row at any level but especially at international level.

“We are not going to take our eye off the ball we know what we need to do.

“We’ll try and secure the three points we need and hopefully we can do it in Moldova and then we have Denmark at home.”

Clarke acknowledged Scotland got lucky in the first half but his team showed the character to dig out a result

He added: “The players have shown over the last couple of years the improvements we have made and the belief they want to do well for their country.

“At 0-0 you have to keep going and hope you get the break.

“The first half it looked like the Faroes might score before us but we managed to put in a better second half performance with the likelihood we could score a goal and we did.”

He also praised goalkeeper Craig Gordon for keeping Scotland level in the first period.

He insisted: "I' m happy. You might not think that to look at my face!

"It was a tough night. We knew it would be. It was the game we expected.

"To be fair to the Faroe Islands I thought they were terrific especially in the first half.

"They really caused us problems. I’m pleased with my goalkeeper and the performance he put in and made a great save.

"We were in safe hands all night.

"I think it’s a group of players who have shown they’ve got the character to come to difficult places and get a result for their country.

"They’ve done it before and tonight was no different.

"It’s a game that everyone thinks we should come and win comfortably but there are no easy games.

"It took Denmark a long time to win here. Anyone who comes here knows they’ve been in a battle."
