Steve Bruce wants new Matty Longstaff contract as he plans for Newcastle's future

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce admits the future of Matty Longstaff is a "concern" as he seeks to tie down the midfield to a new deal.

The teenager has attracted interest from a host of top clubs following a breakthrough year in the north east.

Newcastle chiefs have been in discussions with Longstaff for several weeks but no major progress has been made.

Bruce admits he is in regular dialect with the youngster and is hopeful that a new deal gets penned sooner rather than later.

Premier League rivals are able to entice the midfielder who is free to leave in the summer, but the Toon boss hopes he will stay put.

He said: “I’m sure there are people in his ear, so of course the situation is a concern.

“But he knows what I think of him and I keep reminding him how many other 19-year-olds have played in the Premier League this year.

“I speak to him regularly and will continue to do so. He knows how much the club wants him to stay.”

Longstaff scored the winner on his debut against Manchester United earlier this season.

His current deal does not reflect his current standing in the Newcastle team and his representatives are looking for an improvement.

It is a similar scenario for his brother Sean who broke into the first team earlier than Matty and has been on United's radar previously.

Both players have been left out in recent weeks but Newcastle are aware of the need to keep the pair of academy graduates.

Midfielders Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro were both bought in on loan in January but that is not a reflection on either player, something they have made the brothers aware of.

Bruce looks set to steer the club to survival having been touted as potential relegation candidates at the start of the year.
