Steve Bruce vows to analyse himself after Newcastle United's heaviest Premier League defeat since 2015

Steve Bruce says he will take his portion of the blame for Newcastle United's 5-0 loss at Leicester City - and be trying his hardest to make amends against Manchester United.

The ex-Red Devils skipper is considering switching back to a five-man defence for the weekend after an emotionally-charged week on Tyneside.

After blasting his players in the dressing room at Leicester, Bruce also said: "I'll analyse myself like I always do.

"What have I done? What have we done this week?

"We changed to a back four to see if we are not comfortable with it.

"Tactics and all this nonsense, the big thing is to have a go and show some pride.

"Unfortunately we've let everybody down."

Bruce is considering changes for the encounter with Man United as Matt Ritchie's fitness levels continue to rise and

When asked about wielding the axe, Bruce said: "That's my job as always.

"You have to go back to basics.

"There are four or five who are itching to play, and I will look at that."

Yet despite a rough few weeks in charge, Bruce, speaking to BBC Match of the Day, is not deterred by the job so far.

He said: "I always knew it was a challenge and was delighted to take it.

"I knew it would be difficult.

"Let's hope we can turn around, I have the appetite to turn it round, so I will do my best.

"The one thing I always pride myself on is getting together a team that is as honest and genuine as can be.

"I've only been here a few weeks of course.

"But you learn on performances and games like Leicester.

"Certainly we haven't done enough so the only way we can respond is to roll our sleeves up, go to the training ground and try to do the basics better.

"Defensively, where we have been pretty much OK, we were all over the place.

"There's a lot to work on.

"We made too many mistakes and gave bad goals away.

"Towards the end there was a lack of effort for the fans who'd made the journey down there.

"We can't keep taking them for granted."
