Steve Bruce told his biggest challenge his getting his side to score goals - not reconnecting with the club's fans

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has been told that his biggest challenge is to find a way for his side to score goals.

That's the view of talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino, who believes Bruce should forget about trying to win over the fans.

So far this summer, the Magpies have lost both Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez, who between them scored 79 per cent of Newcastle’s Premier League goals last season.

While the appointment of Bruce also hasn't gone down well with the club's fan base, who are now plotting a fan protest and a possible boycott at St James’ Park in the coming weeks, and Cascarino believes Bruce has a huge challenge ahead of him.

“They’ve basically lost 30 goals in their team,” the former Republic of Ireland international said.

“Newcastle would’ve gone down last season without Rondon and Perez, without a doubt.

“It’s a massive challenge for Steve. He’s taken on a lot of difficult jobs. If you think of the situation at Palace when he took over, the Wigans, the Birminghams, they’ve all had issues.

“Villa was a club in turmoil when he took over and it wasn’t working. He’s had disillusioned fans, he’s had all that before.

“He’s been on the terraces at St James’ Park and he knows what the Newcastle fans want. I think his biggest challenge is going to be what he serves up as a manager in terms of the style.

“Football is dominated now by teams who have a lot of adventure, who are brave going forward, who score goals.

“A lot of the old school managers who are defensive, who set their teams up hard to beat, they’re finding it tough.”
