Steve Bruce talks about Newcastle United's transfer plans for last week of window

Steve Bruce has insisted he will name a "very strong team" to face Burnley in the second round of the League Cup.

However, he has warned that the Magpies may have to be realistic about prospects in the remainder of the transfer window.

With just a week left of the summer trading period, there is an emphasis on reducing the squad size at St James' Park.

Bruce explained: "The problem we have is with the goalkeepers and I am toying with the idea of naming four in the squad, which is unheard of.

"It is fair to say if there is a loan deal (available) if I do that there is no room in the squad without leaving somebody out.

"So it's a difficult situation with finances.

"So if there is a loan deal that's what we will try to do.

"But as for bringing somebody in permanently, I can say that is probably not going to happen."

Bruce was then asked directly about a previous loan target in Hamza Choudhury who was linked last January.

Another previous target, Manchester United's Brandon Williams, joined Norwich City yesterday.

Bruce added: "It would be unfair to mention other players.

"There's a lot out there at the moment.

"As I said there is a little bit of work to do.

"But as we've seen throughout the summer it's been difficult for a lot of clubs, I have never known it so quiet or difficult for finances."

The major outgoing piece of business likely in the next few days will be Matty Longstaff with the 21-year-old linked with a host of Championship clubs.

Bruce said: "It's something that we have decided might be best for Matty.

"I have had that conversation with him.

"We have had one or two enquiries and hope something happens in the next couple of days."

Bruce must now prepare for the cup clash with Burnley knowing a win can help ease early season tension at St James'.

Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey have been ruled out of the squad for Burnley while Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka are still absent through illness and injury respectively.

Bruce said: "We will be making changes but we will be very, very strong."

And recapping the first two defeats of the season against West Ham and Aston Villa, Bruce reflected: "We are frustrated, there hasn't been much in any of the games.

"It's an ideal opportunity to get up and running.

"Can we get through in the cup and get points on the board before the international break."
