Steve Bruce still eyeing Sweden defender but admits he may have to wield axe to whittle down 25-man squad

Newcastle United remain interested in Sweden international Emil Krafth as Steve Bruce looks to add cover to the right-back area of his side.

The Toon boss has DeAndre Yedlin to come back from injury while Javier Manquillo has been something of a surprise package in pre-season after displaying excellent form.

However, has spoken about adding "extra quality" to his squad ahead of deadline day with the Amiens right-back fitting the bill.

A £4.5million offer was knocked back last week but Newcastle have breathing space around them after landing both Allan Saint-Maximin and Jetro Willems in other key areas.

Bruce has also admitted that he might have to reshuffle the squad and will have to move some players on.

The head coach said: "I've got to name a 25-man squad by the end of this week with three goalkeepers.

"So I've got to disappoint some players which is the awful side of the job.

"All of them to a tee have really had a go but I can only pick 22."

It raises the question over whether Jack Colback and Henri Saivet can feasibly stay on board while Achraf Lazaar, Jacob Murphy and even in-form Manquillo could yet be on the outgoing loan list.
