Steve Bruce sings praises of Joelinton but warns Allan Saint-Maximin is now a marked man

Steve Bruce has revealed his satisfaction on Joelinton's performance against Burnley in the 3-1 win at St James' Park.

The big number 9 was played behind Callum Wilson and put in a hard-working physical display against the Clarets.

His efforts did not yield any further goals to his paltry tally, but Bruce was delighted with his showing and the Brazilian was applauded loudly by his bench off the field when he was subbed late on.

Bruce said: "I thought Joe was our best player at Spurs.

"I thought he was our best player when he came on at Newport.

"Tonight Allan maybe shaded it but he was very good. Not playing as a nine suits him and gives him a bit of freedom. He’s added something I’m pleased about."

Bruce was also thrilled by Allan Saint-Maximin's man of the match display with the winger scoring and creating before coming off.

His manager, who watched him endure some tough challenges, said: "I couldn't believe that wasn't a yellow card [the Bardsley challenge on him].

"He needs protecting that's for sure.

"The mentality will be to get after him physically.

"He's had a really, really good week and he's proved again he's a match-winner."

Wilson's double effectively clinched the game though and Bruce said: "I think we've done a fabulous piece of business.

"He's a goalscorer and you just have to see him arriving in the six-yard box to get on Allan's cross to score to see that.

"He's had a good start and long may it continue."
