Steve Bruce says Newcastle United's struggles 'magnified' due to amount of journalists who cover club

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce feels the enormity of his task at St James' Park is sometimes made worse by the amount of media who cover the club.

Speaking at his Press conference ahead of the Leeds game, Bruce was asked if he was the "lightning rod" at the club with Mike Ashley not one for interviews and managing director Lee Charnley last facing the Press two years ago.

Bruce is under the cosh from fans after a bad start to the season following on from last term's struggles.

He said today: "I don't feel as if I'm a lightning rod, I think it's magnified here hugely, because the amount of press now following Newcastle, you don’t get that maybe elsewhere.

"I get on with my job as best I can.

"I'll continue to do that until somebody says different."

Bruce suggested it was up to others to decide if he should be allowed to continue in the job.

He said: "It's for other people to answer that.

"I will continue to do my best - I'm never going to walk away from the challenge of it, that's for sure - so you're asking the wrong person."

Yet he admitted the job was a results-driven business and after his win ratio dropped to 30% overall for Newcastle, he said: "It's difficult, but look, the frustration is, like any other Premier League club or any other Football League club, if you don't get results, then ultimately the manager, head coach, whatever I am, bears the brunt.

"That's what it is, so I have to accept that results haven't been good enough.

"What the disappointment was, was we played very, very well at a difficult place last week, as difficult as it was ever going to get and we played very, very well and didn't get anything out of the game, which is the frustrating thing.
