Steve Bruce says Leeds United have Newcastle to thank for their five-goal blitz

Leeds United were gifted their three points by Newcastle United according to opposition boss Steve Bruce.

The Whites were runaway 5-2 victors at Elland Road on Wednesday night with goals from Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo, Stuart Dallas, Ezgjan Alioski and Jack Harrison.

However, Bruce felt there was more to the match than the three-goal chasm suggested.

“Up until the last 12 minutes, whatever it was, we gave as good as we got and it could have gone either way,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we’ve been punished and we’ve given away bad goals.

“When you give away bad goals at this level, especially two or three in a matter of minutes, then it’s difficult to swallow.”

Bruce did acknowledge United had asked questions of his Newcastle side all evening.

“Up until 75 minutes I was comfortable,” he said. “We looked a threat when we equalised.

“Of course, Leeds are always going to ask you questions with the way they play and they do it very well.

“We’ve gifted them the two, three goals at the end which are, unfortunately, something you see on a park on a Sunday.

“For that, it’s unacceptable.”
